TurboTax charges less because…
You do all the work yourself.
TurboTax is software. It asks questions and you answer them. If you answer wrong, miss a form, or misunderstand a question — it files what you gave it. No one reviews your return. No one catches the K-1 you forgot or the depreciation you missed. You’re the preparer. You’re also responsible for every line.
H&R Block costs about the same — so why not go there? H&R Block seasonal preparers are often entry-level staff working from a checklist during tax season. Turnover is high, continuity is low, and you’re unlikely to see the same person twice. We are a small, focused practice where the same licensed preparer handles your return every year, knows your situation, and is reachable year-round — not just January through April.

Priced on top of your tier

Personal return add-ons

Some situations sit outside a tier because they are their own piece of work. Rather than bury them in a higher price everyone pays, they are billed only by the people who need them. These start where the work starts — the exact figure is quoted before anything begins, never at delivery.

Rental property — Schedule E
Each rental is its own schedule: income, expenses, depreciation, and the repair-versus-improvement calls that come with it. If your records need sorting before they can be used, that takes longer and the quote reflects it. Expenses you can’t document, we won’t deduct — we’ll tell you what’s missing and what it would take to support it, rather than guess.
From $175 per property
Quoted before work begins
Additional state return
Any state beyond New York. A non-resident return on W-2 wages is straightforward; a part-year move with income allocated across two states is not. Priced on the one you actually have, not the average.
From $150
Quoted by state · Included at Concierge
Prior-year return handling
Prior-year returns are priced at that tax year’s applicable tier rate, plus a handling fee for each year filed. Multiple back years are common and manageable — they just take a conversation first.
$100 per year
Requires a brief consultation first
Non-portal document handling
Our workflow runs through the secure portal. Physical drop-off or emailed documents mean manual processing outside it, and volume matters — a labeled folder is not the same job as a shoebox. Excessive or disorganized documentation is quoted above the minimum.
From $75
Avoidable — we offer a free portal walkthrough
Heavy investment activity. Standard covers up to three brokerage statements. What actually drives the work is transaction volume and whether cost basis is reported — one statement with hundreds of trades and missing basis is a bigger job than three clean ones. If that is your situation, we tell you before we start whether it moves you to the next tier. We do not bill per statement.

Year-round planning

Tax planning & mid-year advisory

Preparing a return is looking backward at a year you can no longer change. Planning is the part that actually moves the number — and it has to happen while the year is still open. These are separate engagements from return preparation, available to clients and non-clients alike. More on how tax planning works →

Mid-Year Tax Check-Up
$350
per check-up

Runs May through September. You upload your year-to-date paystubs and any new income documents to your secure portal; we project where you land in April and tell you what to change while there is still time to change it.

  • Year-to-date income & withholding review
  • Full-year tax projection
  • Recommended W-4 or estimated-payment changes
  • Written one-page projection you keep
  • Follow-up email questions on the projection
  • Documents uploaded through your secure portal
Year-Round Advisory
$1,200
per year

For clients who would rather ask before they act. A defined set of planning work across the year — not an open line, but a real one. Return preparation is billed separately.

  • Mid-Year Tax Check-Up included
  • November year-end projection
  • Two scheduled planning sessions
  • Email questions answered within two business days, May through January
  • Priority scheduling during filing season

What we work on

Withholding check-up
The most common one. Are you actually covered for April, or heading for a bill? We check the math against real year-to-date numbers instead of guessing.
Estimated-tax recalibration
For 1099, K-1, or investment income — a mid-year true-up so the Q3 and Q4 payments are right instead of a guess carried over from last year.
Roth conversion planning
How much can you convert before it costs you more than it saves? Filling the bracket deliberately beats converting blind.
Equity compensation
RSU vesting, ISO and NSO exercises, ESPP. If you work in the city and hold company stock, the AMT exposure on ISOs is the thing people find out about too late.
New York residency & the Florida move
New York audits residency hard. If you are splitting the year or planning to change domicile, the planning has to happen before the year closes, not after.
Medicare IRMAA planning
For clients past 62 — this year’s income sets your Medicare premiums two years out, and crossing a bracket by a few hundred dollars is expensive. Almost nobody plans for it.
Inherited IRA distributions
The 10-year rule turned inherited accounts into a multi-year timing problem. Spreading distributions deliberately usually beats waiting until year ten.
Capital gains & loss harvesting
Realizing gains inside the 0% bracket, or harvesting losses before December, when it can still be done.
Charitable giving strategy
Bunching into one year, donor-advised funds, giving appreciated stock instead of cash, or qualified charitable distributions straight from an IRA once you are taking RMDs.
Life events — before they happen
Marriage, divorce, a baby, selling the house, retiring, taking a new job. Every one of these has a tax answer that is better if we talk first.
Not sure which you need? Most people start with the mid-year check-up, then decide whether year-round access is worth it. Book a 15-minute call and we will point you at the right one — or tell you that you do not need either.

Business tax returns

Entity return pricing — quoted by engagement

Business return fees are not listed publicly because no two business engagements are alike. The right fee depends on your entity type, the number of owners or shareholders, how clean your books are coming in, whether we also prepare the owner’s personal return, and the complexity of your specific situation. Every business engagement begins with a consultation — we scope the work, confirm the fee in writing, and you approve it before we start.

S-Corporations — Form 1120-S
Quoted by engagement
Annual S-Corp return with K-1 preparation for all shareholders. We also coordinate closely with your personal return to ensure S-Corp income, distributions, and reasonable salary are handled consistently across both filings.

Step 1
Free intro call
Tell us about your business — entity type, revenue range, how your books are kept, and what you need. 15 minutes.
Step 2
We scope and quote
We review your situation and send a written engagement letter with a flat fee. You know exactly what you’ll pay before we touch a form.
Step 3
Sign and start
You sign the engagement letter digitally through your portal, upload your documents, and we handle the rest.
Business and personal return pairing. When we prepare both your business entity return and your personal return, we coordinate everything under one engagement. S-Corp shareholders, partners, and sole proprietors benefit from having the same firm handle both filings — no gaps between what the business reports and what appears on your personal return.

Common questions

Pricing FAQ

How do I know which tier is right for me?
The simplest guide: if your income is entirely W-2 wages from one employer with a standard deduction, start with Digital. If you have multiple employers, investment accounts, or significant itemized deductions, Standard is likely your tier. If you’re self-employed or receive K-1s from a business you own, Business Owner is the right fit — rental properties sit on top of that tier and are billed per property. If your situation involves trusts, multiple states, or you want year-round access to your preparer, let’s talk about Concierge. For business entity returns — S-Corps, partnerships, C-Corps, and trusts — fees are quoted individually after a brief consultation. When in doubt, contact us — we’ll tell you exactly what fits your situation before you commit.
Do you grandfather existing clients at their current rate?
Yes. Existing clients are never price-dropped or surprised with a higher invoice at delivery. Your rate is established at the beginning of each engagement. If your situation becomes significantly more complex than prior years — for example, you sell a business or acquire significant new investment activity — we discuss that with you before we begin, not after.
What happens if my return turns out to be more complex than the tier I selected?
We discuss it with you before proceeding — not after. If we receive your documents and determine your situation requires a higher tier than originally scoped, we let you know the revised fee and get your agreement before any work begins. You never receive an invoice for an amount you haven’t approved in advance.
Are prior-year and amended returns available?
Yes — we handle prior-year returns and amended returns. Prior-year returns are priced at the applicable tier rate for the tax year in question, plus a $75 prior-year handling fee per year. Amended returns are priced based on the complexity of the change. All prior-year and amended work requires a brief consultation before we begin — please use our contact form to describe your situation.
When will I know my exact fee?
Once you upload your documents through our secure portal, we review your situation and confirm your exact fee before any work begins. If your documents reveal complexity that falls outside your selected tier — additional income sources, forms, or schedules not included in the standard scope — we will contact you with the revised fee and get your approval before proceeding. You will never receive an invoice for an amount you haven’t agreed to in advance. All major credit cards are accepted through our secure portal.
What is the non-portal surcharge and how do I avoid it?
Our entire workflow is built around our secure TaxDome client portal — it’s how we receive documents, deliver returns, collect e-signatures, and communicate with clients. Clients who prefer to drop off or mail physical documents require manual processing outside this workflow, which adds time and cost. The $75–$100 surcharge reflects that additional handling. If you’d like help getting set up on the portal — we offer a free 10-minute phone walkthrough — just mention it when you contact us.
Do you handle IRS notices and audit responses?
IRS notice response and audit representation services are available to existing business clients under a separate engagement letter. These services are not included in any standard return preparation tier and are scoped and priced individually based on the nature of the notice or audit. If you’ve received an IRS or NYS notice, upload it to your portal or contact us to discuss — most notices are more manageable than they appear.
How long does it take to get my return completed?
Turnaround time depends on the time of year and the completeness of your documents. During peak filing season (February through April 15), our standard turnaround is 10–14 business days from receipt of complete documents. Earlier in the season or outside of tax season, turnaround is typically 5–7 business days. The most common delay is incomplete document submissions — our portal organizer helps ensure you have everything before you submit.
